PEGGY LOU SILLS NEDER
October 25, 1926 - June 8, 2022
Peggy left us to go to her heavenly home on June 8, 2022. She passed away peacefully at home from the effects of congestive heart failure.
Born October 25, 1926, in Ponca City, Oklahoma, Peggy moved to Houston, TX, in 1939 and graduated from Lamar High School in 1944. She attended the University of Texas in Austin, where she was an Alpha Delta Pi sorority member. She met her future husband, William (Bill) Neder, at a sorority dance at the Driskill Hotel. Bill was a member of the 10th Mountain Division who was en route from Camp Hale, Colorado, to combat duty in Italy during WWII. Bill asked Peggy to marry him the day after they first met, but it wasn’t until after the war that she said “yes,” and they were married on December 27, 1945. Peggy was proud of Bill’s service to his country in the “ski troops.”
Their son Mike came along in 1947, followed by Kathy (1950), Don (1953), Carol (1956), and Gloria (1961), who shared the same birthday as Mike just 14 years later. In 1968, after all her kids were in school, Peggy was finally able to “get out of the house” and go to work in Women’s Sportswear at Neiman Marcus. Peggy made many life-long friends among her co-workers and loved every minute of the thirty years she worked there.
Peggy also loved spending time at the family beach house at Bolivar, playing marathon card games of “spite and malice” with her arch-card-nemesis Jack Bancroft, and knitting afghans and Christmas stockings for her extensive and appreciative family.
“Lou” will be remembered as a great woman who always thought of others before herself. She never forgot a birthday and always had a caffeine-free Diet Coke in her hand. In addition, Lou used “Butch” and “Buddie Botts” as terms of endearment, loved jigsaw puzzles and sudoku, flew the American flag in her front yard 24/7/365, was loved by her friends and neighbors, and was most proud of how much her family loves and cares for each other--which she considered her greatest legacy.
She is survived by her five children and their spouses – Mike Neder, Susan; Kathy Gent, Patrick; Don Neder, Gail; Carol Fischer Rogers, Buck; Gloria Malek, Steve, plus 19 grands and 21 greats. She was preceded in death by most of her friends and looked forward to reuniting with her deceased husband Bill, brother Don, her parents, and her beloved childhood dog “Lady.”
A memorial service and reception for friends and family will be held Monday, June 13, 2022, at 2 pm at the Texas Liberty Mausoleum, Memorial Oaks Cemetery, 13001 Katy Freeway, Houston. A reception will follow at 3 pm in the Magnolia Event Center of the main building. The family invites you to wear bright colors in honor of Peggy and her bright spirit!
