Freeman powers Dodgers past Reds

CINCINNATI — Freddie Freeman drove in five runs, Tony Gonsolin became the first pitcher in the majors to win nine games and the Los Angeles Dodgers cruised past the Cincinnati Reds 8-2 on Tuesday night.

Gonsolin (9-0) gave up two runs and three hits through five innings and 87 pitches. The 28-yearold righty has a 1.58 ERA. Of the three hits Gonsolin surrendere­d, two were solo home runs, by Jonathan India leading off the Reds first and Albert Almora Jr. in the second.

Freeman put the Dodgers ahead in the third after back-to-back singles by Gavin Lux and Trea Turner, hitting a two-run double into the right-field corner. Freeman delivered a bases-loaded triple in the eighth.

Turner had a seasonhigh four hits and extended his hit streak to 13 games.

Paredes’ three homers lift Rays

Isaac Paredes homered in his first three at-bats and the Tampa Bay Rays edged the New York Yankees 5-4 on Tuesday night at St. Petersburg, Fla.

Paredes, who had four RBIs, combined with Harold Ramirez for backto-back homers in the first off Nestor Cortes, then put the Rays ahead 3-2 in the third and added a two-run drive in the fifth on the first pitch after Clarke Schmidt relieved.

Cortes (6-3) allowed four runs and six hits in 4 1⁄3 innings, giving up three homers for the first time in his major league career. His ERA has risen from 1.50 to 2.31 in his last three starts.

Fedde, Nationals blank Orioles

Erick Fedde allowed two hits over six innings, and Washington beat Baltimore 3-0 at Baltimore.

Cesar Hernandez doubled on the game’s first pitch from Jordan Lyles (4-6) and scored on a double by Nelson Cruz to put Washington in front. Hernandez added an RBI grounder in the second inning.

Contreras leads Pirates past Cubs

Roansy Contreras pitched five solid innings and Bligh Madris hit his first home run to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 7-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs at Pittsburgh.

Madris connected in the sixth inning for a solo shot to right-center field off Mark Leiter Jr.

Goldschmid­t out with back issue

St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Paul Goldschmid­t was out of the lineup for Tuesday’s game against Milwaukee due to what manager Oliver Marmol described as back tightness.
