WEEK 3 HIGH SCHOOL GAMES TO WATCH STAKES GETTING A LITTLE BIGGER
6:30 p.m. at Pridgeon Stadium
Ready or not, district play has arrived for a lot of Houston-area football teams. These matchups represent the first steppingstones toward the playoffs, and starting with a win could go a long way or even decide a district champion. That certainly could be the case with Katy vs. Tompkins. There are also plenty of intriguing nondistrict games this week as teams continue to challenge themselves with quality opponents. None is bigger than North Shore vs. Westfield. Here is a look at some of the top games to watch this week:
THURSDAY
Cypress Woods is 2-0 for the first time since 2009 and has won convincingly in its first two games. The Wildcats have been effective with their rushing attack, collecting 173 and 250 yards against Katy Taylor and Dulles, respectively. Running back Myles West is averaging 6.7 yards per carry after rushing for 182 yards and three touchdowns last week. Cy-Fair, meanwhile, picked up its first win of the season against Cypress Park on Friday. The Bobcats started their campaign with a narrow loss to Bridgeland but responded by scoring 63 points against the Tigers. The series between these teams is tied at 5-5 since 2008.
7 p.m. at Turner Stadium
Klein Collins has the No. 1 offense among District 15-6A teams through the first two games. The Tigers are averaging 330.5 rushing yards per game after blowout victories over Magnolia and Dawson. Klein Collins is 2-0 for the first time since 2019 after going 0-4 in nondistrict games last season. Summer Creek began the season with a close loss to Klein Cain, but the Bulldogs bounced back last week with a blowout victory of Clear Falls. Summer Creek got a huge performance from running back Lloyd Avant, who collected 246 yards and three touchdowns. This will be the final nondistrict tune-up for both teams and is the first matchup between the programs.
Other Thursday games to watch: Oak Ridge (1-1) at The Woodlands (1-1); Clear Springs (0-2) at Klein Forest (2-0); Westbury (1-1) at Lamar Consolidated (1-1); Santa Fe (2-0) at Sam Rayburn (1-1).
