-

Continuing its tradition of Mardi Gras court presentations, the Knights of Momus — Galveston’s oldest Mardi Gras Krewe — presented its royal court during the Coronation Ball on Saturday, February 11. H. Kevin Teichman was crowned King Frivolous CVII and Ashton Grace Teichman was crowned Queen of Momus at The Grand 1894 Opera House in Galveston.

A fifth generation Galvestonian, H. Kevin Teichman is a true BOI, “born on the island,” and an alumnus of Galveston’s Ball High School and Texas A&M University in College Station. Kevin is the CEO of Teichman Group, a Galveston-based and family-owned marine services provider with fifty-one global facilities. From a very young age, Kevin was immersed in Galveston’s culture and even performed in the Sea-Arama Marineworld Water Ski Show during his summers in high school. Kevin is the son of Donna Spence Teichman and the late Henry Rudy Teichman, King Frivolous LXXX. The Teichmans played a critical role in the Knights of Momus’s revival of Mardi Gras! Galveston barging the parade’s first floats designed by legendary Blaine Kern from New Orleans to Galveston. Rudy’s talent for organization transformed the beloved parade’s coordination and execution with innovative practices that are still used to this day. Kevin’s sister, Kelly, was also presented as a Momus duchess in 1988. Kevin and his wife, Erin Moore Teichman, have four children, Rudy Holt Teichman, Henry Hunter Teichman, Ashton Grace Teichman and Curtis Allen Teichman. Kevin is joined by his retinue King Frivolous C William C. Ansell; King Frivolous LXXXIX Michael C. Doherty; First Vice President Robert Kirschner; Parade Marshal Abel P. Ortiz along with Ronald E. Rouse, Mathew J. Seymour, and Christopher B. Goldstraw.

The Queen of Momus, Ashton Grace Teichman, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. Kevin Teichman. She is the granddaughter of Donna Spence Teichman and the late Henry Rudy Teichman, and Loretta Sue Moore and Bartlett Gardere Moore of Galveston. A junior at the University of Mississippi, Ashton is a member of the Gamma Psi Chapter of Zeta Tau Alpha and is pursuing an undergraduate degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Law Studies. Following graduation, she plans to attend law school to focus on criminal justice reform. Ashton is an accomplished vocalist signed with SixFoot Productions and BMI Management, and her song “I Want ” was featured in the soundtrack of Rita Wilson’s movie Boy Genius. Her gift for acting also has landed her roles in two feature films, Journey and The Lost Husband,

starring Josh Duhamel. Ashton’s relatives have a rich history of involvement with Mardi Gras! Galveston and the Knights of Momus serving in leadership roles and as royalty. Ashton’s aunt, Kelly Marie Teichman, was a Momus duchess in 1988, and her grandfather, Bartlett G. Moore, was an active Momus member and presented his daughter and Ashton’s aunt, Magen Ivey Moore Ortiz in 1998. Ashton was presented by her brother, Rudy Holt Teichman, at this year’s Coronation Ball.

The Coronation, themed “The Gilded Age,” was a grand gala chaired by Knights of Momus Vice President Vic Matthews and his wife, Cindi. The Mistresses of the Robes were Stephanie Frugé and Sara McLeod; and the Duchess gowns were designed by Miwa Sakashita of Miwa Fashions.

The Knights of Momus was founded in 1871 and actively participated in Galveston’s Mardi Gras until 1941 when World War II interrupted the celebration. Members responsible for reviving the Krewe in 1985 were William S. Cherry, Michael C. Doherty, E. Douglas McLeod, John H. Spencer, Kenneth R. Shelton, Jr., Vincent J. Tramonte and James L. Ware.

Dancie Perugini Ware is the honorary founding trustee and Joan Williams McLeod is the honorary royalty trustee.

This evening, the Knights of Momus will present the most spectacular of all Galveston Mardi Gras parades – the Momus Grand Night Parade, which will air live from 6:30-8PM on KPRC-NBC Channel 2. The illuminated night parade will feature colossal floats, dozens of high school and college marching bands and thousands of coveted beads and doubloons.
