The everything-and-the-kitchen-sink action-fantasy “Everything Everywhere All At Once” is the best movie of 2022, according to the Houston Film Critics Society, which awarded the film its top honor at its 16th annual ceremony at the Midtown Arts and Theater Center Houston Saturday night.

But “Everything,” which also took home the prizes for best director (Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert) and supporting actor (Ke Huy Quan), didn’t dominate the night as two other films also won three awards each.

The showstopping Indian action-adventure-musical “RRR” walked away with foreign language feature, original song (”Naatu Naatu”) and stunt coordination while Martin McDonagh’s comedic Irish drama “The Banshees of Inisherin” took best actor (Colin Farrell), supporting actress (Kerry Condon) and screenplay (McDonagh).

“Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio” won two awards: animated feature and score (Alexander Desplat) while “Apollo 10½: A Space Age Childhood,” directed by Houston-born Richard Linklater, received the Texas Independent Film Award (TIFA) as the best movie made in Texas in 2022. “Good Night Oppy,” about NASA’s Mars Exploration Rover named Opportunity, beat out more high-profile films as “Navalny,” “Bad Axe” and “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed” to take the best documentary award.

It has been quite a ride for the scrappy “Everything Everywhere All At Once” which has been a surprise indie-film success story and is in the running for 11 Academy Awards, 10 BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) Awards and five SAG (Screen Actors Guild) Awards. It also won the Dallas-Fort Worth Film Critics Association’s top honor.

Saturday night marked the Houston Film Society’s first inperson awards ceremony since 2020.

The 39 members of the Houston Film Critics Society work in print, TV, radio or online across Houston and Southeast Texas.
