UH nets $4.2M profit on athletics
The University of Houston’s athletic department posted a profit in the first year after pandemic restrictions were lifted, according to its end-of-the-year NCAA report.
UH posted $78 million in total operating revenue during the 2021-22 fiscal year, a 16 percent increase from $66.8 million in 2020-21. The athletic department reported operating expenses of $73.8 million for the fiscal year — which ran from July 1, 2021, to June 30, 2022 — which resulted in a $4.2 million revenue surplus.
Tickets sales increased 204 percent as capacity restrictions were lifted following the COVID-19 pandemic. Revenue went from $1.7 million in 202021 to $5.1 million in 202122. Football ($2.5 million) and men’s basketball ($1.6 million) generated 81 percent of ticket sales.
Athletic-wide donations nearly doubled, from $3.8 million to $7.5 million.
Among expenses, coaching compensation for the 17 varsity sports accounted for $16.6 million, which included $7.8 million for coach Dana Holgorsen and his staff.
Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech all reported a surplus in revenue for 2021-22.
Texas posted revenue of $239.2 million ($14.1 million profit). A&M had $193.1 million in revenue ($15.4 million and Texas Tech had $110.1 million ($5.3 million profit).
Joseph Duarte UNLV player dies: UNLV defensive lineman Ryan Keeler died Monday, the university announced. No cause of death for the 20-year-old was given.
Keeler transferred to UNLV from Rutgers last year. He played in seven games in 2022 and made eight tackles.
