Rice unveils AAC schedule; Keenum among UH honorees

Rice’s football team will open American Athletic Conference play against South Florida on Sept. 23 at Tampa, Fla.

Rice, one of six schools moving to the AAC this summer, will play its first conference home game against East Carolina on Sept. 30.

The Owls open the 2023 season at Texas on Sept. 2, then follow with home games against Houston and Texas Southern. The AAC informed Rice that the Bayou Bucket game against UH may be moved from Saturday, Sept. 9 to Friday, Sept. 8.

Other AAC games are Oct. 10 at Tulsa, Oct. 28 vs. Tulane, Nov. 4 vs. SMU, Nov. 11 at UTSA, Nov. 18 at Charlotte, and Nov. 25 vs. Florida Atlantic.

UH to honor seven: The University of Houston announced its sports Hall of Honor class for 2023, a seven-person group that includes NCAA career passing leader Case Keenum, veteran NFL defensive lineman Simon Fletcher and two-time MLB AllStar Michael Bourn.

The other four in the class are Mike Booker (men’s golf ), Rick Brewer (baseball), Sonya Watkins Ellis (women’s basketball) and Sandra Cummings Glover (women’s track and field).

Lewan among Titans released

New Tennessee Titans general manager Ran Carthon started clearing up some much-needed salary cap space by releasing three-time Pro Bowl left tackle Taylor Lewan for a failed physical and also veteran wide receiver Robert Woods and kicker Randy Bullock. They later released linebacker Zach Cunningham also for failing a physical.

Lewan tore his right ACL last September.

Canada tops U.S.: Blayre Turnbull

Golf Hall finalists named: Three-time major champion Padraig Harrington, double major winner Dottie Pepper and swing coach Butch Harmon were among 12 finalists announced for the 2024 Class of the World Golf Hall of Fame.

The other male finalists are Jim Furyk, the late Tom Weiskopf and 1928 U.S. Open winner Johnny Farrell. Other female finalists are Sandra Palmer, the late Beverly Hanson and Cristie Kerr.
