Jan. 6 proceedings
Regarding “Jan. 6 prosecutors want Pence forced to testify,” (Feb. 24): The former vice president is just one of at least half a dozen individuals close to Donald Trump who have already used or are now claiming some form of privilege to avoid giving sworn testimony before a grand jury. This reticence begs the question: If you have exculpatory evidence, why resist?
It is plausible to argue that no such exculpatory evidence exists; rather, that this opposition derives from two dark motives: First, to evade having to give false testimony and subsequently being charged with perjury. Second, to avoid providing testimony that would have severely damaging legal consequences for the witness, the former president and, even more broadly, for some sitting members of the present House Republican majority who, just before the insurrection, were known to be involved in plotting to use fake electors to nullify the results of the 2020 vote. Regarding “McCarthy gives Carlson access to 1/6 footage, raising alarms,” (Feb. 21): I can only imagine the euphoria that the MAGA Trump followers must be feeling over the fact that House Speaker Kevin McCarthy handed over the Jan. 6 tapes to Fox News’ Tucker Carlson.
Reading this just days after learning that I will be on the hook for paying for Ken Paxton’s lies and misdeeds, I am beyond upset.
C’mon people. Wake up and smell the smoke in the air. Because it’s there and
it’s getting thicker. Wipe your eyes and, when you can see clearly again, take a long, long look at our future.
Look ahead for your kids and say a prayer for your grandchildren.
