It’s almost time to spring forward again

- By Shaniece Holmes-Brown STAFF WRITER

It’s the time of year when we all have to call up that familiar phrase: “spring forward, fall back.”

As warm temperatures knock off the chill of a mild Houston winter, spring is just around the corner.

Here’s everything you need to know heading toward the first day of spring and the day we will need to change our clocks for Daylight Saving Time.

When does spring start?

Spring officially arrives at 5:24 p.m. EDT on Monday, March 20.

Also named the “Spring Equinox,” it marks the beginning of the spring season in the Northern Hemisphere and the autumn season in the Southern Hemisphere.

When does Daylight Saving Time start?

Daylight Saving Time always starts on the second Sunday of March and ends the first Sunday of November, so dates tend to change.

When it does, people move their clocks forward one hour and will have an additional hour of sunlight during summer evenings.

When should you change clocks?

This year, Daylight Saving Time kicks off at 2 a.m. Sunday, March 12.

The purpose of time changing at 2 a.m. was to minimize disruptions in daily life.

If everyone is either asleep or partying, who can tell the difference, right?

Once DST ends, time moves back one hour and returns to the standard time.

What is the purpose of this idea?

The idea for Daylight Saving Time was created by Benjamin Franklin in his essay, “The Economical Project” while he was working as an American delegate in Paris in 1784.

The purpose of Daylight Saving Time is to make better use of daylight during the summer months.

There have been many controversies and concerns from residents who dislike the annual tradition.

Despite that, legislation was proposed in 2021 to make it permanent, called the Sunshine Protection Act.

As of yet, it has passed only in the Senate.
