Houston most stressful city for workers, says study

Where’s the most stressful place to work? Houston is at the top of the list, according to new report.

The report, by LLC.org, listed the top 10 Most Stressful Cities for Workers (2023), and five cities in Texas make the list, three of which are in the top five. LLC.org helps people navigate hurdles to start companies across the country.

What does the data say?

According to the report, workers in Houston clock in an average of about 39.5 hours weekly. That is above the national average of 38.7 hours employees work weekly.

The average time it takes a Houston employee to commute to and from work each day is 52.8 minutes.

One in three of those employees are on the road each morning before 7 a.m.

The report states that 30.4 percent of Houston employees do not have health insurance, far above the national average of 10.5 percent.

Financial strain is another factor that makes Houston a very stressful place for employees. Forty-six percent of families in Houston are from single-income homes, according to the report.

The national average for income growth rate is 6.2 percent, and Houston is below at 4.5 percent.

The national average of employees who work remotely is 17.9 percent. Data shows that 15.6 percent of Houstonian­s work remotely.

Data from the Census Bureau has shown that working remotely can help reduce workrelate­d stress.

What other Texas cities made the top of the list?

Along with Houston, Arlington ranked second, Dallas is third, Corpus Christi is sixth and Fort Worth came in at eighth on the list.

What cities are the least stressful?

According to the report, Madison, Wisconsin, is the least stressful city.

All of Madison’s statistica­l averages are below national average, such as: the average hours worked weekly is 36.6 hours; the average commute round trip is 37.4 minutes; only 5.4 percent of its employees do not have insurance; 35.7 percent of families have a single-income household; and 26.5 percent of workers are remote, which is higher than the national average. The rest of the top five least stressful cities are: Fort Collins,

Colorado; Fremont, California; Minneapoli­s, Minnesota.; and Providence, Rhode Island.
