Huskies ousted in first round

A 29-point night from senior Maks Klanjscek couldn’t close the gap for Houston Christian in a 90-69 loss to the New Orleans on Sunday night in the first round of the Southland Tournament in Lake Charles, La.

Klanjscek, who hit 10 of his 25 shots, including four 3-pointers, added seven rebounds but had five of 15 turnovers for the Huskies (10-22, 7-11 Southland). Pierce Bazil added 13 points on 6-of-12 shooting.

Jordan Johnson matched Klanjscek with 29 points for the Privateers (11-19, 7-11), while Jamond Vincent had 10 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.

Brandon Newman scored 19 points and Zach Edey added 17 as the host Boilermake­rs held on to beat the Illini.

Braden Smith added 15 points for Purdue (26-5, 15-5 Big Ten). It is the first time a team has won the league title by three or more games since 2014.

Camren Wynter made a layup with less than a second remaining to lift the host Nitanny Lions over the Terrapins.

Jalen Pickett scored 16 points, Andrew Funk had 14 and Myles Dread had 11 for Penn State (19-12, 10-10 Big Ten), which trailed by as many as 16 late in the first half.

Jahmir Young scored 14 of his 26 points in the second half for Maryland (20-11, 11-9).

Trayce Jackson-Davis had 27 points, nine rebounds and six assists in his final home game, and the Hoosiers forced a steal on the Wolverines’ final possession to seal a victory.

Indiana (21-10, 12-8) clinched a double bye into Friday's Big Ten quarterfin­als.

Caitlin Clark had 30 points, 17 assists and 10 rebounds in her 10th career triple-double for the Hawkeyes, who built a 37-point halftime lead and beat the Buckeyes to win the Big Ten Tournament for the second straight year.

Georgia Amoore scored 25 points to help the Hokies beat the Cardinals to win its their Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament title.

Lauren Jensen missed what would have been a game-tying layup in the final seconds as Wildcats held off the Bluejays to earn a spot in the Big East tournament final.

Charlisse Leger-Walker scored 23 points and Bella Murekatete added 21 to help the Cougars earn a trip to the NCAA Tournament by beating the Bruins for the Pac-12 title.
