Raiders, Garoppolo agree to 3-year deal

- WIRE REPORTS

HENDERSON, Nev.— Jimmy Garoppolo has agreed to a three-year, $67.5 million contract with the Raiders, a person with knowledge of the deal told the Associated Press onMonday, likely answering the question of who will be Las Vegas’ starting quarterback next season.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal can’t be announced until Wednesday.

Garoppolo’s contract includes $34 million in guaranteed money, the person said.

The Raiders have been linked to Garoppolo almost from the moment coach JoshMcDaniels benched nine-year starter Derek Carr with two weeks left in the season. Carr, the Raiders’ alltime leader with 35,222 passing yards and 217 touchdown passes, has since signed with the New Orleans Saints.

McDaniels was the Patriots’ offensive coordinator when Garoppolo backed up Tom Brady in New England beginning in 2014. Garoppolo was traded to San Francisco during the 2017 season and immediately became the 49ers’ starter.

He was effective when healthy, going 38-17.

DT Hargrave to leave Eagles to join 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers made a big addition to their stellar defense, agreeing to a four-year, $84 million contract with star defensive tackle Javon Hargrave.

The deal with Hargrave included $40 million in guarantees and gives the Niners a top interior pass rusher to team with AP Defensive Player of the Year Nick Bosa on the edge.

The 30-year-old Hargrave is coming off his most productive season i as a pro with a careerhigh 11 sacks to help the Eagles reach the Super Bowl.

The Niners also filled another hole quickly, agreeing on a oneyear deal with former firstround quarterback Sam Darnold. Darnold gives San Francisco depth with Trey Lance working his way back from a broken ankle and Brock Purdy recovering from elbow surgery.

Commanders keep Payne from leaving

The Washington Commanders are keeping Daron Payne around, thanks to the secondbiggest contract for a defensive tackle behind only seven-time All-Pro Aaron Donald.

The Commanders agreed to terms with Payne, who had 11½ sacks last season, on a four-year contract worth $90 million, with $60 million guaranteed.

Review of roughing the passer proposed

The NFL’s competition committee will consider making roughing-the-passer penalties and personal-foul penalties subject to video review.

The two potential rule changes were among nine that were submitted by clubs.

The competition committee will consider the rule changes later this month when NFL owners gather in Arizona for their annual meeting. Among the other proposals:

• An option to try to convert a fourth-and-20 from the kicking team’s 20-yard line instead of attempting an onside kick;

• Seeding wild-card teams ahead of division champions if the division champ has a losing record (and the wild-card team has at least four more wins.
