One of the world’s biggest wholesale retailers is expected to break ground on a new location in Tomball this June according to city officials.

Costco filed a permit last year to construct a store at the northeast corner of Holderrieth Road and State Highway 249. It will be the first Costco in Tomball.

The 161,131-square-foot warehouse is expected to sit on 25 acres and will also include a 10,000-sqaure-foot Costco fuel station.

Costco is a membership-based wholesale store with a wide selection of products including groceries, home goods and other items. Costco isn’t only known for its bulk sales but also has several other departments such as electronics, clothing and a food court.

Nathan Dietrich, community development director with the city of Tomball, said the retailer aims to start construction in June with plans to open in 2024.

Harris County Precinct 3 started construction this month on a project to expand Holderrieth Road from a two-lane road to a four-lane boulevard.

“This expansion will help with the increased traffic generated by this development,” Dietrich said.

A single-family neighborhood is also set to be developed to the north and east of the Costco tract, he added, and additional commercial developments have been proposed along Holderrieth frontage.

Dietrich said that the store is expected to create approximately 125 job opportunities and will draw shoppers from across the region, bringing major economic benefits to the city. The Costco is expected to make $196 million in year one and over $300 million by year six, according to Dietrich. He said the location is projected to bring $13.2 million in net benefits to the city over the next decade.

According to Forbes, in 2022 Costco was the sixth largest retailer in the world. Costco has 849 locations and employs over 304,000 full and part-time positions. Costco made $222.7 billion in revenue in 2022.
