Man killed during child sex investigat­ion

A Deer Park man died Tuesday when he was shot as police officers raided his home during an investigat­ion into child sex abuse material, police said.

The man, who wasn’t identified, was shot by a

Deer Park police officer and also shot himself, according to the Deer Park Police Department.

At 7:30 a.m., officers went to a home in the 2500 block of Pickerton Drive in southwest Deer Park to serve a search warrant for promotion of child sex abuse material, according to a news release.

According to the statement, officers were allowed inside the home by a woman who said a man was asleep inside.

The officers went to the bedroom, woke the man up and asked him to come outside, according to the news release. Police said the man then “produced a firearm.” He was shot one time by the officer and then shot himself, according to the statement. The man died inside the house, according to police.

It’s not clear if the man who was shot was the subject of the investigat­ion. Authoritie­s did not respond to requests for more informatio­n Tuesday evening.

The Pasadena Police Department and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office are investigat­ing the shooting, according to the news release.

The officer, who hasn’t been named, was placed on administra­tive leave, authoritie­s said.

The Deer Park Police Department hasn’t reported an officer-involved shooting to the Texas Attorney General’s Office since 2015, when Texas police department­s were required to begin reporting shootings to the state, according to data compiled by the Texas Justice Initiative. Police department­s are required to report data about shootings within 30 days of an incident.
