A judge has sentenced a Baytown woman who embezzled more than $3 million from the roofing company that employed her to two years in federal prison.

Judy Green, 55, pleaded guilty in April to wire fraud in connection with the yearlong scheme. Green used her position in the accounting department of Liqua Tech, a roofing and weatherproofing company headquartered in Houston’s East End, to make fraudulent entries in the company’s records to send money to herself and her children, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

Also on Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Alfred Bennett ordered Green to serve three years of probation and pay back $3.4 million, according to court records. She was required to pay back $10,000 immediately.

According to a news release, Green’s theft caused Liqua Tech to lay off employees and put off bonuses.

Liqua Tech opened in 1983 and produced annual revenues of more than $10 million, according to charging documents. Green was hired in 1994 and was often the only manager of Liqua Tech’s accounts payable, according to charging documents.

Green’s theft was discovered by the business’ owner, who noticed a large payment to an unknown credit card company in summer 2022, according to prosecutors. Green was fired in July that year.

An audit revealed that the thefts had been happening since 2012, according to prosecutors.

The thefts were reported to the FBI. Green was charged in February. After initially pleading not guilty in March, she entered a guilty plea in April.

Green will surrender at a federal prison in the near future, according to the Justice Department.
