Panthers agree to terms with Buccaneers’ Canales
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Carolina Panthers have agreed to hire Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Dave Canales as their new head coach, according to two people familiar with the situation.
Canales has informed the Buccaneers that he is taking the job, although there are still details that need to be finalized before the move is announced, according to the people who spoke to the Associated Press on Thursday on condition of anonymity.
Canales will be the seventh head coach since owner David Tepper took over as owner in 2018.
He inherits a Panthers team that went 2-15 last season and does not have a first-round draft pick in 2024.
Canales, who is Mexican-American, joins Ron Rivera as the second head coach of Latino descent hired by the Panthers.
The hire caps a meteoric rise for the 42-year-old Canales, who was working as the Seattle Seahawks quarterbacks coach in 2022.
He spent 13 seasons in Seattle where he worked with Dan Morgan, who was recently hired as the Panthers general manager and president of football operations. Morgan replaced general manager Scott Fitterer, who was fired after the season.
Canales broke into league in 2010 as the Seahawks wide receivers coach, where he spent eight seasons and helped the team win a Super Bowl in the 2013 season.
Report: Colts exec called 911 for Irsay
First responders arrived at the home of Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay on Dec. 8 after longtime team executive Pete Ward placed a 911 call, concerned that Irsay was suffering from congestive heart failure, The Indianapolis Star reported Thursday.
The newspaper obtained a recording of the 911 call from Hamilton County via a public records request.
Ward told the dispatcher that Irsay’s breathing was labored and that he was “mostly” unconscious. When Ward arrived, he said Irsay’s nurse said his oxygen level was low.
Police officers from Carmel, Ind., a northern suburb of Indianapolis, wrote they found the 64-year-old Irsay unresponsive, breathing and with a bluish skin tone, according to a police report.
The police report said he was treated with he was treated with Narcan, a medicine that can reverse an opioid overdose, before medics arrived on the scene. Irsay was later transported to a hospital.
Browns interview Johnson for position
The Browns expanded their search for a new offensive coordinator to both coasts on Thursday.
Brian Johnson, fired earlier this week by the Eagles, met with Cleveland coach Kevin Stefanski, and the team received permission from the Chargers to interview coordinator Kellen Moore for the opening, a person familiar with the team's plans told the Associated Press on Thursday.
Stefanski has been looking for a new OC since firing Alex Van Pelt last week, days after the Browns' season ended with a blowout loss to Houston in the wild-card round.
Stefanski, a finalist to win AP Coach of the Year for the second time, has also interviewed Seattle offensive line coach Andy Dickerson, former Buffalo offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey and Texans quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson for the offensive coordinator vacancy.
