Commanders hiring Kingsbury, Whitt

-

Kliff Kingsbury is joining the Washington Commanders just in time for their latest search for a franchise quarterback.

The Commanders are hiring Kingsbury as their offensive coordinator and Joe Whitt Jr. as defensive coordinator, according to a person with knowledge of the decision. The person spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity Sunday because those deals had not been announced.

Kingsbury, 44, is the first addition to Dan Quinn’s staff since the former Dallas Cowboy defensive coordinator was named coach earlier in the weekend.

Kingsbury on Saturday pulled out of consideration for the Las Vegas Raiders’ offensive coordinator job after initially agreeing to go there and work for coach Antonio Pierce.

Kingsbury is back in the NFL as an assistant after spending last season as an offensive analyst and quarterbacks coach at USC, coaching potential top pick Caleb Williams.

Kingsbury coached the Arizona Cardinals from 2019-2022 after five seasons at Texas Tech. Whitt, 45, follows Quinn to Washington from Dallas, where he was the Cowboys secondary coach and defensive passing game coordinator.

First regular-season game in Brazil set

The Philadelphia Eagles will be the host team for the NFL's first regular-season game in Brazil on Friday, Sept. 6 — a day after the 2024 season opener, commissioner Roger Goodell said Monday.

Goodell addressed gambling, officiating, diversity, the Rooney Rule and much more in an nearly one-hour news conference before players and coaches from the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers met the media for Super Bowl opening night.

Goodell made news when he said the Eagles will play in Sao Paolo against a to-be-named opponent. It’ll be the first time in 54 years the NFL has played a game on Friday night of its opening weekend.

Browns OC Dorsey to mentor Watson

Ken Dorsey’s background playing quarterback and coaching QBs made him a natural pick for the Browns, who hope he can work his magic with Deshaun Watson.

Fired during the season in Buffalo, Dorsey was introduced Monday as Cleveland’s new offensive coordinator by coach Kevin Stefanski.

Dorsey has already connected by phone with Watson, and he’s looking forward to getting to know him better.

“He clearly has a great feel for a lot of different aspects of football, whether it’s schemewise for us, instincts of what he sees on the field in terms of the defense and adjusting things,” Dorsey said. “That’s the exciting part about working with him: getting him back to the elite level of who he is.”

Watson made just six starts in his second season in Cleveland before fracturing his right shoulder.

Titans agree to terms with coordinators

The Tennessee Titans have coach Brian Callahan ‘s first additions to his coaching staff with Nick Holz as his offensive coordinator and Dennard Wilson as defensive coordinator.

Callahan plans to call offensive plays himself, but he will have his former De La Salle High School classmate as his coordinator will work in a similar role to what Callahan had in Cincinnati as coordinator working with Titans quarterback Will Levis.
