For Sigmund Freud (1856–1939), dreams and the images they convey were a nocturnal manifestation of a person’s darkest and innermost desires. In 1899, the Austrian-born psychoanalyst published his most important work, The Interpretation of Dreams, which opened the door to a completely new psychological dimension: the world of the subconscious.
