The U.S. is home to an estimated 228 billion trees. They have built-in sensors that respond to the shorter nights and rising springtime temperatures with an imperative command: “Grow, grow, grow!” Plants compete with one another for every second of sunlight and every ounce of water and other resources such as room to grow. When spring returns trees get busy producing leaves and blossoms, but they also grow by adding to their height and girth and by replenishing their bark and phloem, the vascular tissue that conducts food produced in the leaves to the other parts of the plant.
