THE SWEET SOUND OF PITCHING WOO

-

Down at the pond, a gentleman moor frog (Rana arvalis) has just one thing on his mind: to out-sing hundreds of competitors to win the webbed hand of a lady. The males gather in a breeding chorus, making a noise that has been described as sounding like air escaping from a submerged empty bottle. Their ensemble performance is loud enough to attract females from all over the neighborhood, and the outcome is impressive: Each mating encounter can result in up to 3,000 eggs.
