BINGE EATING AT 68 DEGREES
As spring temperatures creep toward 70°F, the first swallowtail butterfly (Papilio machaon) caterpillars emerge from their eggs—and they’re born ravenous. Widespread throughout North America and Eurasia, these butterflies have a wingspan of up to 3.4 inches. The caterpillars’ preferred foods are in the celery, carrot, and parsley families. The voracious eaters can grow to 1,000 times their original size before pupating.
