EARLY RISER

-

The honeybees are reluctant to leave the hive when the temperatures are still in the 50s, and wasps don’t show up en masse until fruit has ripened. But one of their ilk welcomes the early spring: the bumblebee. Thanks to their hair, which provides a degree of insulation, and the muscles they use to shiver and thereby raise their thorax temperature, bumblebees can fly when the temperature is as low as 50°F. In this way they get the jump on a season of productive pollinating.
