AN ISLAND THAT GROWS AND GROWS
Geographically, Iceland is Europe’s westernmost and North America’s easternmost outpost in the Atlantic. Though the island is about the size of Kentucky, the population is not that much larger than that of Corpus Christi, Texas. A thermal hot spot beneath the island fuels its volcanoes, which erupt regularly, and that makes Iceland one of the youngest places on the planet. The Westfjords, the oldest part of Iceland’s landmass, were formed only about 16 million years ago.
