Iceland has hundreds of geysers, volcanoes, and thermal springs. Because of the island’s extreme tectonic activity and its location atop some 30 active volcanic systems, the landscape is perforated like a wheel of Swiss cheese. Over the course of millennia the many craters and chasms have filled with melted glacial ice to create microbiotopes.
