On April 25, 2016, Sylvia Contreras Chavarria surrounded by her family, peacefully joined by her loved ones in Heaven. Sylvia, whom many knew as “Sivi” was born on December 31,1928 in Westmorlan­d, CA to the late Guadalupe and Blasa Contreras. She attended Brawley Schools. Sivi married Ruben Chavarria on May 5, 1 945 and were blessed with 10 children. She was a homemaker, grandmothe­r and wife. She loved her family dearly as they meant everything to her, each and every one of them. S ivi’s passion was cooking. She had the family secret recipes. She enjoyed cooking on Sundays for family and guests from sun up to sun down. Her meals were filled with love and stories of her childhood. She enjoyed reminiscin­g and sharing those memories. Sivi was a very knowledgea­ble woman and had an answer for everything. S ivi lived a long life and lifetime of memories, which will be passed on for generation­s.

Services will be held on Thursday, May 5 at St. Margaret Mary Church in Brawley. Rosary will be at 9 a.m. followed by Mass at 9:30 a.m. with Father Ed Horning officiatin­g. Sivi will be laid to rest at River view Cemtery following Mass.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Rub en; daughter, Rebecca Ybarra; infant son, Alex; sister, Lucy Garcia; and brothers, Tom as, Albert and Rito Contreras.

Sivi is survived by her sisters, Mari Contreras and Delfina Escalera; daughters, Cecilia “Ceci” Verdugo, Mary Helen “Cori” (Mike) S an Roman, Dolores (Manuel) Sevilla, and Alice (Oliver) Gastelo; sons, Rudy (Lupe) Chavarria, Andy (Sandra) Chavarria, Ruben “Moki” Chavarria, and Mark Chavarria. Sivi’s lasting legacy is 22 grandchild­ren ,38 greatgrand­children, and 7 great- great- grandchild­ren.
