Kidnapped immigrants rescued.
A group of 13 immigrants was freed Monday by state police officers after authorities received a report from an undisclosed source, said the Secretary of Public Safety.
Authorities said an unknown individual told the police illegal activities were being done at Villa Cortez Street at Fraccionamiento Villas de la República neighborhood in eastern Mexicali and south of the East Port of Entry.
State Preventive and Ministerial police officers arrived on scene and observed a suspicious individual who had a firearm folded on his back.
The suspect attempted to flee by absconding inside a residence.
Authorities said several individuals yelled for help from inside the house.
The suspect, who was identified as José “Doe,” no age reported, and from Hermosillo, Sonora, tried to flee by jumping over the backyard wall, but was arrested.
The individual had a .38-caliber gun loaded with a magazine and six cartridges.
Police officers also arrested Mexicali resident Raúl Medrano Munguía, no age reported either.
Authorities rescued 11 men and a woman from different parts of Mexico and one from El Salvador.
The police said the immigrants were kept kidnapped for several days, during which they were also punched and threatened.
Authorities said victims’ relatives had already made a payment to free the immigrants.
Police officers searched other residences in the city Monday night to find more immigrants.
The suspects were transported to federal authorities to begin their processing, while the immigrants were transported to the State Kidnapping Support Unit.
