Southwest 3g57-28r00 ads celebrate new chapter

Southwest High School celebrated the class of 2016 on Thursday night in El Centro after reaching 20 years of existence.

“This is the cherry on top of the cake on 20 years of existence, this class is multi-talented and is unique, on behalf of the board we congratula­te the class of 2016,” said Jacinto Jimenez president of the Central Union High School District Board of Trustees.

During the ceremony two of the most notable students of the class had the opportunit­y in front of their fellow classmates.

Miranda Montenegro said that her class was very well-rounded and felt that a talented group comes up every 10 years.

“I’m excited, I’ve waited for this day for a very long time, what makes is more exciting is that I’m going to a four-year university and is my dream school since ever, which is UCLA,” Montenegro said before the ceremony. “I’m excited not just for today but about my future and what’s to come.”

She plans to major in English and make film studies her minor. Montenegro said that she hopes to become a screenwrit­er and be able to write her own TV shows.

During her speech she gave thanks to her favorite teachers.

Fellow classmate Dahee Choi said during her speech that she saw her years in high school as a four-chapter novel and reminded the rest of the class that from this point on they’re all the authors of their own story.

“I feel great, I’m excited about graduating, it has been a really long four years,” Choi said before the ceremony.

She will be attending the University of California, Santa Barbara, where she’ll major in sociology. Choi said she wants to go into internatio­nal relations and internatio­nal business after she completes her degree.

Class president Sofia Altamirano plans to attend San Diego State University and major in food and nutrition and after college plans to come back and practice here in the Imperial Valley.

“I feel excited, I’m ready to go to college and start something new in my life,” Altamirano said.

As part of the ceremony the band, the chamber orchestra and choir performed for the graduates, then Montenegro and Choi had their opportunit­y to speak to the class, followed by the presentati­on of the diplomas to the graduates.
