CALEXICO — After taking a bye during the first week of the high school football season, Calexico High was more than excited to take on Yuma in its season opener one week ago.
The Bulldogs are coming off a 0-10 campaign in 2015, yet with John Tyree taking over the program before the end of last school year, the players were motivated and confident before the game against the Criminals.
“We all worked really hard during the off season, lifting weights and later really putting in the work on offense and defense,” said senior quarterback Frank Moreno.
The Bulldogs’ and Tyree’s work paid off as the squad went on to win its first game since 2014 after defeating Yuma, 34-7.
In the victory, Moreno rushed for 185 yards on 13 carries and scored four rushing touchdowns in addition to finishing with 25 passing yards. “I felt really excited and happy,” said Moreno about the victory and his performance.
Moreno noted the dedication and performance of the O-line including, Daniel Castillo, Benjamin Bustos, Alonzo Bermudez, Rene Flores, Emilio Reyes, Hugo Sosa and Daniel Arellano.
“I couldn’t have done it without the offensive line,” added the 17-yearold. “Those guys are the reason I was able to do what I did.”
Moreno said he is looking forward to the rest of the season and seeing the team build on its performance against Yuma.
Calexico will travel to take on San Diego at 7 p.m. today.
