In his eighth year with Holtville High, head coach Kevin Smith Jr. was unable to recall a time in recent memory that his team had a shut-out victory at home like it had against Desert Mirage here on Friday night.

The Vikings football team won its first home-opener against Desert Mirage High by a score of 51-0.

“Proud of coaching staff and player tonight,” he said. “We executed the game plan to perfection.”

The Vikings made a clear statement that they were ready to play by scoring twice early in the first quarter of the game.

“Work hard, dedication and commitment,” said quarterback Anthony Castro on what his team did to get ahead early in the game.

The Vikings continued to add on to their lead throughout the game by utilizing their run game.

The majority of their touchdowns came from their running back duo of Adam Montes and Andrew Camacho.

Holtville added an exclamation point to their lead and solidified their win after a short touchdown run from Montes near the end of the third quarter, bringing the scoring to 41-0.

Castro, who also plays as a defensive back, was able to add the nail to Holtville’s opponent’s coffin by returning a pick-six from Desert Mirages’ own 40yard line during the last two minutes of the game, ending their touchdown frenzy with a score of 51-0.

“It was a team win. We came in this game confident,” expressed Castro. “They came in thinking we’re a cupcake team — we ain’t no cupcake team. We’re going to try to beat all the teams coming ahead of us, and our No. 1 goal is to win CIF.”

The Holtville Vikings are set to play Classical Academy at home at 7 p.m. Friday.
