Jackets shake up standings

BLYTHE — The third meet of the Imperial Valley League boys’ season took place here on Wednesday afternoon, with the host Palo Verde Valley Yellowjack­ets earning the win to shake-up the IVL leader board.

Palo Verde is now tied for first in the standings with Brawley Union High with 15 points each, while Southwest follows with 14 points.

On Wednesday, Palo Verde posted a 480 to Brawley’s 510 and Imperial’s 522.

Southwest came in fourth with a 537, followed by Holtville (563) and Central Union (602).

Palo Verde’s Cyrus Jimenez earned medalist honors shooing an 85 on the par-73 course.

Brawley’s Branden Kalin came in second finishing one stroke behind Jimenez with an 86, while Imperial’s Ryan Dale took third with an 86.

Rounding out the rest of the top finishers were Holtville’s Cole Mamer, Southwest’s Jason Cordova and Palo Verde’s Michael Sanchez, who all shot a 93.

SOCCER Local teams prep for state cup

A total of four local soccer teams will begin play in the Cal South State Cup this week, traveling to compete in different cities against the state’s top club teams.

Similar to the World Cup, the teams will first participat­e in the group stage with the top teams advancing to the Round of 32, which will begin next week.

The Dynamo El Centro Soccer Club boys’ 2001 team and the Dynamo girls’ 2001 Orange team will participat­e in the Governors Division.

The Dynamo girls’ 1999 team will participat­e in the President’s Division along with the San Diego United — East 1999 team, which is made up of local girls from Southwest, Central Union and Imperial highs.

TRACK AND FIELD Spartans top Jackets

The Central Union High track and field team defeated Palo Verde Valley in an Imperial Valley League contest with the boys winning 107-20 and the girls winning 111-14.

Winnings multiple events for the boys was Angel Espinosa, who won the 200 and 400 meter events, Austin Ortiz who won the 110 and 300-meter hurdles and Angel Rico, who won the shot put and discus events.

Also for Central, Vinnie Flores won the 100 meters and Adrian Atondo won the 800 meters.

For the Spartan girls, Karen Ortiz won the 200 and 400 meters, Christina Marquez won the 800 meters, the high jump and the long jump, Arely Pacheco won the 100 and 300 meter hurdles and Dalhia Ruiz won the 100 meters, while Nohemi Anderson won the 1600 meters.

Also for Central, Michelle Hunt won the triple jump.

SOFTBALL Eagles top Kings, 11-3

The Southwest High softball team defeated Kofa 11-3 in a nonleague contest on Thursday afternoon.

Arianna Izaguirre picked up the win with five strikeouts and scattering just four hits.

Offensivel­y, Victoria Cruz went 3-3, Adriana Molina went 2-2 with a double and three RBIs, Iliana Manzano went 2-4 with a double and one RBI, Sadriena Rodriguez went 2 -4 with one RBI, Emily Tellez went 1-2 with two RBIs, Mady Jungers went 2-4, Izaguirre and Audra Carter each had a hit and one RBI and Leslie Solano had one hit.

The Eagles return to action at 6:30 p.m. today traveling to face Central Union High.

BOYS’ TENNIS Scots top Vikes

HOLTVILLE — The Vincent Memorial High boys’ tennis team recorded a 15-3 win over Holtville High on Wednesday afternoon.

For the Scots, Mariano Santana won two matches 6-0 and 6-0, Diego Gallastegu­i won all three matches 6-0 and Francisco Moreno won two matches 6-0.

In doubles action, Rolando Rodarte and Alvaro Gallastegu­i won 6-0 and were subbed for Ricardo Medina and Luis Iturribarr­ia, who won two matches 6-1 and 6-1

Alan Huizar and Jaime Honold won 6-2 and 6-0, were subbed for Juan Honold and Leo Garza, who won 6-2.

Also for the Scots, Rogelio Fontes and Rodrigo Vela won 6-2 and 6-0.

Eagles top Wildcats

The Southwest High boys’ tennis team worked to defeat Brawley Union High 12-6 in IVL action on Wednesday.

In singles play, Raj Toor swept winning 6-0, 6-1 and 6-0, Rodion Voldman won 6-0 and Pablo Verdusco won 6-0 and 6-2.

In doubles Calvin Patel and Dario Rodriguez swept winning 6-2, 6-1 and 6-3, No. 2s John Flores Michael Flores won 6-2 and No. 3s Jorge Avalos and Maharsh Patel won 6-2 and 6-4.
