Cancer Resource Center of the Desert anniversary

The Cancer Resource Center of the Desert reached a milestone, celebrating its 10th anniversary of helping women and men navigate through the difficult process of battling all forms of cancer.

This year alone, six uninsured patients received a value of $570,000 in benefits through CRCD’s patient navigation services.

Through the contributions from the community, from businesses, public agencies and private individuals, the CRCD can continue to operate and provide services to those that need it through a difficult and scary time in their life.

Kudos to a well organized and fun event with a great goal.

Derby Days in Holtville

The event is a fundraiser for the Holtville club of The Boys & Girls Club of Imperial Valley.

Patrons come in, bet on pre-recorded horse races and winners share winnings with the club. It’s a fun and unique way to raise money for a great cause.

AME church centennial anniversary

The Johnson Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in El Centro reached its 100th year milestone recently.

The El Centro AME church was initially organized in 1915 and formally established in April 1917 as the St. Paul African Methodist Church on nearby State Street.

The chapel was physically relocated to its current site in 1953 and its name officially changed to Johnson Chapel, according to information provided by Thomas, who has done extensive research about African American churches in the Valley.

SDSU-IV inters run Calexico

Inters at the San Diego State University-Imperial Valley Campus worked various positions within the city of Calexico as they look to further their education and exposure into the workforce.

The internship program, known as the Employee Development and Advancement Program, was specifically designed to provide prospective students with an immersive experience that reflects public sector work, whether it be in police services, building and planning, housing and economic development or finance.

The pilot program owes much of its creation to City Manager Armando Villa, who shortly after being hired in June noted that staffing levels were below optimal levels and that the city lacked sufficient resources to hire additional employees.

Kudos to all involved.

Dynamo girls’ soccer club

The Dynamo El Centro Soccer Club Girls’ 2001 Orange team won the Cal South State Cup this past weekend in Temecula.

Dynamo scored two goals in the last minute of overtime against Santa Paula Extreme from Ventura County to win the championship.

Kudos to the squad for representing the Valley well in its respective sport.
