County American Legion Auxiliaries raising money for poppies for veterans

Following the triumphant valor of the American Armed Services in World War I, the American Legion adopted the poppy as a symbol of freedom and the blood sacrificed by troops in wartime.

Throughout the month of May, the Imperial County American Legion Auxiliaries will have poppies for distribution, paid for by donation, to increase awareness of underprivileged veterans and families throughout California.

Kudos to organizers of the ninth annual Law Enforcement Memorial

The solemn tolling of a commemorative bell rang out 39 times Friday night at the El Centro courthouse during the ninth annual Imperial Valley Law Enforcement Memorial.

Each bell toll represented the life of a law enforcement official who died in the line of duty here in the Valley since 1920.

Wrestler Evan Shape for signing with University of Ozarks

Heading into his final year as a member of the Central Union High wrestling team, Evan Sharpe’s mindset was to simply have fun.

The 18-year-old had finished his junior season with a broken collar bone and a severe eye infection and wasn’t feeling too confident about his chances to obtain an offer to wrestle in college.

Yet perhaps it was this laid-back approach that helped Sharpe get back to the basics of the sport and find his passion for wrestling once again.
