Talent flashes at IVL finals
The Imperial Valley League finals held Thursday evening at Brawley Union High School marked the end of the track and field regular season.
It acted as the last track meet for many but a chance to compete at CIF for some.
“I’m super tired and glad all my work paid off,” said Central Union High senior Karen Ortiz, who finished in first place with a time of 1:00.50 in the girls’ 400 meter race. Ortiz also won first place last year and started to compete in the sport for her first time the same year.
Following Ortiz in second place was Luisa Montoya with a time of 1:03.01 and Brawley Union High’s Annet Ruelas in third place with a time of 1:03.84.
Finishing in first place for the boys’ 400 meter race was Southwest High’s Tyler Saikhon with a time of 51.08.
“It was an awesome feeling when I got up to the finish line. I can’t describe it,” explained Saikhon, who also won first place in the 110-meter hurdles.
Behind Saikhon was Imperial High’s David Camacho who finished with a time of 51.36 and Central Union High’s Angel Espinosa with a time of 51.42.
Brawley Union High’s Alyssa Maldonado placed first in the girls’ 100 meter dash with a time of 13.39. Calexico High’s Amanda Tamayo, with a time of 13.42, placed second in the race and Southwest High’s Nicole Gasca, with a time of 13.50, finished in third.
