-

A woman and her son were airlifted for treatment after being involved in a vehicle accident Tuesday night, stated a California Highway Patrol news release.

Phoenix, Ariz. residents Lizzette Felix, 42, and her 8-year-old son sustained injuries after their vehicle overturned on Interstate 8, east of Towland Road.

Felix was flown to a hospital as precaution after she suffered moderate injuries with lacerations to the head and abrasions to her left shoulder.

The 8-year-old suffered minor injuries with abrasions to the right arm and elbow and was flown for treatment.

At approximately 7:20 p.m., Felix was driving a 2002 Suzuki Grand Vitara with her son as a passenger on I-8, east of Towland Road.

Felix was traveling in the second lane at approximately 70 miles per hour and allowed her vehicle to move onto the right shoulder of I-8.

She then turned the steering wheel to the left in an attempt to get back onto the roadway, causing her vehicle to move across both lanes.

Felix turned the steering wheel to the right in an attempt to regain control of her vehicle. The turning movement caused her vehicle to overturned and come to a stop on its roof facing the southwest direction of travel.

The driver remained trapped in the vehicle until Imperial County Fire personnel arrived on scene and used the Jaws of Life tool to extract her. Felix’s child was able to exit the vehicle through the rear hatch of the Suzuki.

Alcohol was determined to not be a factor in the collision and preliminary reports suggest that both parties were using safety belts. The collision is still under investigation, stated the news release.
