Annual Meet the Spartans event kicks off year
Dozens of community members had the opportunity to see a different side of Central Union High School athletics during the annual Meet the Spartans event that took place at the school’s gymnasium on Monday night.
Parents and other family members piled into Spartan Arena to witness the introduction of the school’s fall sports programs as well as the Associated Student Body (ASB) members, Spar-Teen Drill Team, Tall Flags and majorettes.
The community rally has kicked off the start of the sports season for a number of years now and is something that this year’s ASB president has always looked forward to.
“I like that all the parents can come and see their kids,” said Alexa Pacheco, senior ASB president. “It’s nice to see the parents smile and take photos whenever their kid is introduced. It’s nice that everyone is able to be involved.”
Welcoming the parents as they entered the gym was the always exciting Great Spartan Band and the varsity cheer team. After short introductions from Athletic Director Sandy Noujaim and Principal Craig Lyon, the students and various coaches took over for a night of Spartan spirit.
Included in the introduction were also first-time head coaches Bernadette Marcuson, Ashley Fila and David Peña, who took over the varsity volleyball, varsity cheer and varsity football programs, respectively, this year.
Pacheco said the rally was always exciting as it helped kick off another school and athletic year for the school.
“We’re all really excited for the fall this year,” she said. “We’re looking forward to seeing our football team bounce back.”
While the first football game will be played on Friday, the volleyball team will get things started today when the team travels to face West Shores for the first game of the season.
