How well did your child perform?

- BY EDWIN DELGADO Staff Writer

Today the state’s Department of Education will release the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress test results for 2017. The scores will give parents the opportunity to see how different schools performed.

In addition to the school reports that will be accessible online, each school district will send parents a personalized report on the academic progress of their children by mail.

Understanding individual scores

When parents receive the state test results there are a few things parents need to keep in mind, the report will consist of two pages. The first will have a graph displaying the scores of a student and can be compared to previous scores provided he/she took the test in the past. Although the numerical value of the score may be confusing, the graph will tell parents whether the student exceeded the standards for its grade level, met the standards, nearly met them or didn’t met them.

On the right-hand portion of the report, parents will be able to see where their child stands in the various areas tested.

The second page consists of a more detailed view of what the scoring ranges are and provide additional information each of the four categories.

The reports are designed to allow parents to identify where a student is doing well and in what areas it may be struggling. Parents are encouraged to contact teachers and school administrator for any question or concerns they may have.

School performance

In addition, to the reports, parents will get in the mail. The Department of Education will also publish the test scores of the overall student population from each school today.

The data can be accessed online and will show results for individual schools, school districts, and the entire state.

To know how a particular school is doing, you can do so by visiting caschooldashboard.org and type in the name of the school of your interest.

The state uses five different categories to score how well a school is doing, the lowest grade is will show onefifth of a circle colored in red, the second lowest two-fifths colored in orange, followed by three-fifths in yellow, four fights in green and the best performance level by a full blue colored circle

Once a school is selected, users will have the choice of looking at four different reports. The equity report will show how the entire student body performed on a range of state indicators.

The status and change report will show the current status of a school in each category compared to the results from the previous year, the detailed report will give you a glance at the performance over a period of time and the student group report indicates performance level for all state indicators across student groups including males, females, and ethnic groups. Editor’s note: The Imperial Valley Press will look to report on individual school reports in the next few days.
