THANKSGIVING
traditions around the Valley
Thanksgiving traditions range from helping the less fortunate to playing football. The Imperial Valley Press asked volunteers at the annual Thanksgiving lunch Wednesday at the Salvation Army to share their traditions.
“I enjoy gathering with my family and loved ones. We all come together and gather around the table and just enjoy each other’s company. We just make the traditional foods like turkey and ham. My mom always has to make the ham, that’s her thing. I usually celebrate it with my entire whole family. My siblings, nieces, nephews, parents and friends come over.” Gabby Davis, El Centro
“Usually for Thanksgiving, I’m from Minnesota so my dad’s side of the family usually comes over, like his aunts and uncles and all my aunts and uncles and cousins. We all go to either my house or my grandma’s house and we just eat really good food and it’s awesome. My family really likes playing football so we try to play football or something outside together.” Lexi Joyce, El Centro
“For Thanksgiving, the last four or five years, I’ve helped here at the Salvation Army dinner. For the five years before I cooked 30 turkeys a year at my church with help from different people, to help the Salvation Army prepare. Having worked with kids and taught for 36 years, I’ve always worried about kids having food on vacation and holidays. This way, I know when they come here they’re getting one really good meal.” Karen Wallman, El Centro
“My family celebrates Thanksgiving a day after because of work. When we celebrate, it’s everyone. We really just enjoy the time we don’t get every day. Cheesy potatoes is a must and turkey obviously. Also some desserts like apple pie and pumpkin pie. And tradition-wise, it’s watching football.” Vincent Arvizu, Brawley
