Eaagles advance to tourney final
SPRING VALLEY — The Southwest High softball team advanced to the championship game of the Monte Vista tournament on Saturday and were leading University City, 17-6, going into the fourth inning before the game was called due to inclement weather.
The game is subject to be finished at a later date.
In the final, Arianna Izaguirre was on the mound for Southwest until the game was called.
Offensively, Izaguirre was 2-4 with two RBIs; Iliana Manzano was 2-4 with a double, a home run and three RBIs; Adrianna Molina was 2-4 with three RBIs, and Sadriena Rodriguez was 2-3 with a double and two RBIs.
Also for Southwest, Jewelia Mendez was 2-3 with a double and four RBIs; Jaelyn Niebla and Leslie Solano were both 2-2 with two RBIs, and Mady Jungers was 2-2.
To reach the final, the Eagles defeated Central Union High, 6-4, in the semis on Saturday morning.
Rodriguez picked up the win against the Spartans throwing a complete game, while giving up four hits, striking out nine and giving up three earned runs.
At the plate, Rodriguez was 4-5 with an RBI; Manzano was 2-4 with a double and two RBIs; Solano was 2-4 with an RBI, and Izaguirre and Molina each had a hit.
The Eagles ended tourney pool play on Friday with a 16-2 win over Fallbrook, earning them the No. 1 seed.
Rodriguez also earned the win in that game, pitching three innings, and tallying five strikeouts without giving up a hit or a run.
Freshman Melissa Flores threw three innings of relief, tallying two strikeouts and scattering four hits.
Offensively, Molina went 2-3 with two home runs and four RBIs; Rodriguez was 3-3 with a home run and one RBI; Izaguirre went 2-4 with a double, triple and three RBIs; and Manzano was 2-3 with two doubles and two RBIs.
Also for the Eagles, Niebla was 2-2 with two RBIs; Thyara Aguilar had a double with three RBIs, and Victoria Cruz had two hits, while Jungers, Emily Tellez, Mendez and Lexi Earle each with a hit.
This puts Southwest at 6-0 on the season with a suspended game pending.
The Eagles return to the diamond at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday to host Holtville High.
