CALEXICO — More than 750 students participated in Rockwood Elementary School’s annual X Games on Wednesday, competing in several activities aimed at promoting physical activity.
“They get a chance to show their sportsmanship and a chance to compete against each other in a friendly environment,” said Silvano Lopez, academic support teacher.
The event had started off with a morning assembly where students took part in the event’s opening ceremony. Each individual classroom had chosen a country to represent in homage to the Olympic Games.
Students from every grade level competed in five different activities, including a tug of war, kick ball, baton relay race, hula hoop passing game and ball activities.
Each game was played for 15 minutes before students were then transitioned to the next activity. A total of three breaks were provided to students, as well as an ice pop during one of those breaks.
“It’s a fun day for them,” Lopez said.
Through the years, the games have been modified based on teachers’ input. Organizers had determined that that the 15-minute activities work best and promote an adequate amount of physical activity.
The five activities performed during Wednesday’s event also represent a scaling back of the original eight activities that had debuted during the games’ inaugural year and which proved problematic.
“It was way too big to monitor,” Lopez said.
