Bulldogs top Eagles for IVL win

CALEXICO — The Calexico High baseball team used aggressive base running and heads-up defensive plays to defeat Southwest High, 8-2, at Elmer Belcher Field here on Friday night.

The result was a crucial one for the Bulldogs as the squad went into Friday’s game still in search of its first Imperial Valley League victory.

The Eagles took the teams’ first meeting, 9-8, in walk-off fashion earlier this week, yet struggled to recreate some of the same magic on Friday.

Keeping the Eagles off balance was Bulldog starting pitcher Derek Silva.

The freshman right-hander ended up throwing six innings and tallied five strikeouts in the process, while Jorge Ibarra recorded the save throwing in the final inning and giving up just one hit, while striking out one.

The outing was a solid one for Silva, who also made key defensive plays coming off the mound to make assists at first and second base throughout the game.

Calexico chipped away at the Eagles throughout the game, scoring runs in the second, third, fifth and sixth innings to secure the win.

The third and sixth innings proved to be the biggest for Calexico as they scored three runs in each of those outings.

The Bulldogs improve to 5-6 overall and 1-3 in IVL play with the result, while the Eagles drop to 5-8 overall and 1-3 in IVL.
