Kofford critics forget First Amendment

- GARY REDFERN El Centro

In their recent letters to the editor, Neil Gerber and Sharon Williams are most eloquent in their criticism of the views Brett Kofford expresses in his weekly column. That’s good. It demonstrates the freedom of expression and ideals that, unlike any singular person, truly are why America is and always has been great. Unfortunately, Mr. Gerber and Ms. Williams, in going a step beyond criticism and calling for the silencing of Mr. Kofford because he has views with which they disagree, miss the value of the First Amendment.

This newspaper runs a syndicated column by Joe Guzzardi that is always anti-immigration. I find his views vile and even dangerous. I have thought of writing and asking his column be discontinued, but thought better of it and did not. If we are to be a true democracy, we must allow all views to be aired. At least the Imperial Valley Press gets it, even if some of its readers do not. But there is still time to learn. Just keep reading.
