EL CENTRO — Desert Oasis High School proudly graduated its Class of 2018, which consisted of 31 students, during a commencement ceremony held Thursday at Southwest High School’s Jimmy Cannon Theatre. DOHS students Josue Landeros, Susan Tadeo and Jason Max Parra were selected to present their own written speeches during the ceremony.

“For a long period of time, I thought I’d be just another statistic by dropping out, not graduating and not knowing what to do with my life,” said Parra during his speech. “It wasn’t until I arrived at Desert Oasis that I changed the way that I thought and opened my eyes. Education then became my top priority as something I needed and wanted to finish. Because of this school, I was able to reach my greatest accomplishment in life. I’d never thought I’d be standing here in his cap and gown with the honor to speak to all of you.” During her speech, Tadeo thanked family members and school faculty that helped her throughout her highschool journey.

“This school is known as a school for bad kids, and in the beginning I also thought that,” Tadeo said during her speech. “But graduating from Desert Oasis, I’ve gotten to know this is full of wonderful, smart kids that have a bright future ahead of them. We entered high school as kids, and now we leave as young adults ready to go and experience the real world. Congratulations Class of 2018, we made it.”
