Tenaska announces local scholarship winners
EL CENTRO — Tenaska Imperial Solar Energy Center South and Tenaska Imperial Solar Energy Center West, utility-scale solar projects in Imperial County, have awarded a total of $8,000 in college scholarships to Imperial County high school students this spring.
A committee at Tenaska headquarters selected the college-bound seniors to receive the academic scholarships. Preference was given to students who demonstrate they are prepared for college study, have good character and rank in the top 50 percent of their class.
“Education is the cornerstone of future success,” said Todd Jonas, Tenaska senior vice president of operations and asset management. “We are pleased to help these promising students further their education goals and become tomorrow’s leaders.”
The eight scholarship winners were:
Brawley Union High School senior Nicholas Cardenas, son of Michael and Maggie Cardenas
Calipatria High School senior Mariah Zendejas, daughter of Jeffrey and Connie Zendejas
Central Union High School seniors Sujey Ocegueda, daughter of Graciela Ocegueda, and Bryanna Ruiz Fernandez, daughter of Margarita Fernandez
Holtville High School senior Sydney Mange, daughter of Marci and Andy Mange
Imperial High School senior Ryan Dale, son of Geoff and Linsey Dale
San Pasqual Valley High School senior Erica Marin, daughter of Sofia Ojeda, of Winterhaven
Southwest High School senior Veronica Boothe, daughter of Richard Escalante and Linda Boothe.
The annual scholarship program managed by Omaha, Neb.-based Tenaska has awarded $40,000 in scholarships locally since 2013. It has awarded more than $700,000 in scholarships nationwide since 2000. Approximately 850 students in communities where its facilities are located have benefited from the program.
130-megawatt Tenaska Imperial South and 150-megawatt Tenaska Imperial West each operate under 25-year power purchase agreements with San Diego Gas & Electric Co.
Tenaska Imperial South is owned by CSOLAR IV South, which is comprised of affiliates of Tenaska and Prudential. Tenaska Imperial West is owned by CSOLAR IV West, which is comprised of a Tenaska affiliate.
