Flourishing businesses are great news

In coming weeks new stores will start doing business in our largest cities.

In our border town of Calexico, Family Dollar is about to open a store in what used to be the busiest area of the city. Located on East Second Street the store will be located just across from the 99 Cents Only store. The additional shopping venue represents a breath of fresh air to an area that has struggled to attract visitors and customers and has dozens of buildings empty.

On the other end of the street, more business appears to be on its way, thanks to the opening of the new west port of entry. The New Hoyo Tianguis is the structure that was once the home of Calexico Vons, Safeway and Longs Drugs. It is being revamped as an indoor shopping mall in order take advantage of its proximity to the vehicle border crossing. The major surviving store there has been California Wholesale. But the re-launching could hopefully bring more businesses to the location.

According to owners, the site will reopen by the end of September and some businesses have already shown interest in opening there. However, owners are analyzing what businesses that will be accepted in order to avoid having similar stores at this mall.

In the county’s seat, authorities recently held an opening ceremony of Menchie’s. I must admit I had not heard of this company before until the city announced the opening. From what I read, many local residents are aware of the items offered in as many Adelante Valle readers went crazy on our Facebook page by tagging friends and sharing pictures of the ceremony. If I am not wrong what has attracted clients to Menchie’s is its yogurt-based ice cream that customers can combine at their will with several toppings.

On the north end, in Brawley, Mayor George Nava leaked on social media the opening of a new Taco Bell on Main Street. The eatery’s conceptual design has already been posted by Nava on his Facebook page. But even better, the mayor said more companies have plans to come to the area.

Some other businesses of smaller size and less visible are in the process of operating here in our Valley. This development is good for many reasons. First, it stimulates other businesses by improving cash flow. Circulating money is for the economy what blood is for our bodies.

Second, it provides more funds for city coffers via taxes, permits, licenses and other services. This translates into more revenue for services to the public — roads, parks, water, et cetera.

Last but certainly not least, the opening of these businesses provides so-needed job opportunities for local residents.

The key to keeping all the benefits that come with these companies will be to patronize these stores and eateries as much as possible in order to keep them doing business, or else they won’t survive.

Spending our hard-earned dollars locally helps keep our friends and neighbors employed. Flourishing businesses are great news
