Brawley girls pick up two wins at tournament

BRAWLEY — Early season basketball is, by and large, composed of a seemingly never-ending series of relatively low-stakes, experience-building tournaments, designed to allow teams to figure out what they’ve got before they hit the local circuit.

These tournaments are plentiful, but so far this season, none of them had been held in the Valley (at the varsity level).

Thursday served as a corrective to this as the annual girls’ varsity tournament tipped off at Brawley Union High School.

Five games were on the docket, two at 4 p.m., two at 6 p.m. and a 7:30 p.m. nightcap.

Five games is too few to draw any concrete conclusions about who will ultimately prove to be of championship mettle, but the hosting Wildcats did give themselves a leg up by sweeping their two matchups.

The first two games of the evening were Brawley-Indio and Calipatria-Rancho Mirage.

The Wildcats defeated the Rajahs by a final score of 4430, but Indio made them work for it early.

Brawley made only six field goals in the first half and were only up 19-11 at the break.

It wasn’t until the second half that the home team managed to find the floor with the gas pedal as they busted out for 21 points, thanks largely to junior Angie Zamudio lighting it up from deep, canning five three-pointers.

Over the course of the game Zamudio would account for half of her team’s 44 points.
