City to plant 150 trees
The city of Imperial announced that as a project partner in the Imperial Valley Urban Forest Project, it will be receiving 150 trees that will be planted throughout the city’s parks.
Seventeen of the awarded trees have already been allocated to the city’s new Cambria Park, located at Victoria Ranch and Alejandro Avenue.
Imperial joined the Imperial Valley Urban Forest Project as one of the participating agencies in April 2017. The project was submitted under the Cal Fire Urban Forest Expansion and Improvement Grant Program and awarded in February 2018.
“Trees contribute to the human and environmental health of a community offering advantages such as heat stroke protection, cleaner air, stress relief and more,” said Ember Haller, Imperial’s community services director. “Planting trees beautifies our neighborhoods while helping our residents feel better and enhancing their quality of life. However, we want to ensure we are planting the right kind of trees. The city is currently reviewing a list of 19 different tree species to ensure those selected will be the most beneficial to the community.”
In addition to the trees, the city will be participating in a Tree Stewardship Program provided through Trees of San Diego. Residents and community members who wish to participate are asked to attend a Tree Stewardship Workshop on April 6 held at the Community Services Center, 124 W. Ninth St., Suite A.
To register for the workshop, please contact (760) 355-3316, or email communityservices@cityofimperial.org.
The Imperial Valley Urban Forest Project will service the entire county through the planting of 1,400 trees.
