Pot bust results in escape attempt
A 28-year-old Los Angeles woman who was arrested at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Calipatria State Prison for a drug offense allegedly battered custody staff while subsequently attempting to flee custody.
Meka Joicelynn Adams was visiting a prison inmate when prison staff allegedly observed her acting suspiciously and passing an unknown object to the inmate, a press release stated.
Staff approached Adams and reportedly discovered two bindles of marijuana weighing 18 grams in her possession, stated Lt. Efren Uribe in a press release.
While attempting to process Adams for transport to the county jail, she allegedly attempted to flee the visiting process area and battered three corrections staff members, Uribe stated.
Adams was ultimately subdued, placed in restraints and transported to the county jail where she was processed and had bail set at $1,500.
Adams is facing felony charges, and if convicted, she faces three to five years in prison. The prison inmate visited by Adams was taken to an outside hospital where he relinquished a third bindle, Uribe stated.
Upon his return to the institution, he will be placed into the Administrative Segregation Unit. The prison’s Investigative Services Unit is conducting an investigation into this matter.
