INFO A free training class will be held in Heber that will teach people how to properly identify and report significan­t weather phenomena and contribute to public safety. Even with sophistica­ted technology like radar and satellites, forecaster­s still need ground truth informatio­n from trained weather spotters throughout the year. You will learn about how thundersto­rms work, how to identify cloud features associated with microburst­s and tornadoes, and how your reports tie into warnings and advisories issued by the National Weather Service. INFO The Annual Celebratio­n of Education, a free community event showcasing student performanc­es and accomplish­ments, is just two weeks away. The focus of the evening will be on the “Whole Child” and how our schools strive to meet all the needs of our students, including their academic, social, emotional and physical needs. The Celebratio­n of Education is a unique opportunit­y for us to showcase the exciting and innovative things happening at all our public and private schools, and to recognize the dedication and hard work of our local teachers, staff and students. An art exhibit with a variety of paintings from local students, as well as live music will be available in the foyer from 6:30 to 7 p.m. The 2019 Above and Beyond Award will recognize an individual in Imperial County who impacts the educationa­l community through leadership and service. This year again, the program will showcase several performing artists, from the Calexico High School Marching Band to a drill team from Meadows Union Elementary, the Dogwood Lionettes, and many more amazing student groups. The audience will also be treated to a wonderful closing act: “Mamma Mia,” interprete­d by Brawley High School students.
