Brawley Sunstrokers claim 10th straight IVSL team title
YUMA — On Saturday the Imperial Valley Swim League’s 2019 season came to a close at the IVSL Championships held here at the Valley Aquatic Center.
The season ended in familiar fashion, with the Brawley Sunstrokers claiming the overall team title. Just like they did in 2018 and 2017 and 2016 and 2015 … and every other year for the past 10 years.
The Sunstrokers 2,170.5 combined (boys and girls both) team points gave them a comfortable margin over the second-place Holtville Stingrays.
1,213 of those points came in the girls’ competition, where Brawley finished 300 points ahead of the Imperial Sea Lions. The remaining 957.5 came the boys’ side, where the Sunstrokers were actually outpointed by the Yuma Wahoos by 53.5 who finished third overall.
Despite winning the team title, the Sunstrokers did not pace the field in gold medals. The Stingrays did that. Their 22 first-place finishes doubled up the Sunstrokers 11, but Brawley was able to land more swimmers in the 2-10 spots, thus accruing enough points to secure the overall win.
Holtville’s excellent showing was owed, in large part, part to the dominance of la familia Duarte, featuring Kinzy (10), Trypp (12) and Ady (14) who each won a boatload of races — five for Kinzy and Trypp, and four for Ady — securing them High Point trophies for their respective age divisions.
Teammates Nataly Black (girls 6U, winner of three races) Hector Mercado (boys 7-8, winner of three races) also were High Pointers.
Other local age-group winners included Imperial’s Ash Finnell (boys 6U), Brawley’s Benjamin Limentang (boys 9-10), Imperial’s Annika Mitosinka (girls 11-12), El Centro’s Dominic Lerma (boys 13-14), and Brawley’s Abbie Castro (girls 15-18).
