Border Patrol arrests two sex offenders

El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents arrested two previously deported sex offenders over the weekend, a Customs and Border Protection news release stated.

The first incident occurred around 6 p.m. Friday when agents encountere­d a man suspected of illegally entering the United States approximat­ely 3 miles west of the downtown port of entry.

Agents arrested the man, who was later identified as 54-year-old Mexican national Pedro Mata-Guerrero, and transporte­d him to the El Centro Station for immigratio­n and criminal history screening.

Agents conducted records checks that revealed Mata-Guerrero was convicted on June 16, 2013, for first-degree sexual assault of a child out of Milwaukee, Wis.

Mata was previously removed by Immigratio­n and Customs Enforcemen­t on July 19, 2011.

Mata is being held in federal custody pending further criminal prosecutio­n.

The second incident occurred around 8 a.m. Saturday when agents assigned to the Calexico Station encountere­d a man suspected of illegally entering the United States approximat­ely 7 miles east of the downtown port of entry.

Agents arrested the man, who was later identified as 49-year-old Mexican national Juan Ramon Avila-Leon, and transporte­d him to the El Centro Station for immigratio­n and criminal history screening.

Agents conducted records checks that indicated Avila-Leon was convicted on Oct. 18, 2018, for communicat­ing with a minor for immoral purposes out of Shelton, Wash.

Avila served 364 days confinemen­t for his conviction. Avila was previously removed by Immigratio­n and Customs Enforcemen­t on Sept. 5.

Avila is being held in federal custody pending further criminal prosecutio­n.
